Description: Selling three of my vintage German musical beer steins with lids purchased while stationed in Germany in 1967. All three have working music boxes that play when the stein is lifted. I have given all an up-close, detailed inspection, so please read the descriptions of each and view all the pictures. Other than what is mentioned, these ceramic steins have enameled colors and scenes as clear as when purchased almost 60 years ago. A Family at Play - Two of the steins have the same design but play different songs. These beautiful steins appear to depict a family of three in traditional Bavarian dress playing a game at a table. The phrase “Bei spiel und scherz", below a castle scene, and "Bleibt froh das herz", below a village scene, translates to “Games and jokes keep the heart light”. Both steins have themold number of 1164 imprinted under the handle. The pewter lids have the patina of age but should be easily shined up if you so desire (personally, I like old things to look their age, so I left it alone in case you agree). The only difference between the two is one has a Swiss Mapsa music box which plays “Der Frohliche Wanderer”(“The Happy Wanderer”), and the other a Swiss Lador music box that plays “Auf Wiederschen” (“Until We Meet Again”). A Couple at the Well - This beautiful stein with a dark blue enamel background appears to depict a man and woman with water buckets in Bavarian dress at a well as another looks on. The phrase “Bier lieb und lied", and "Macht nie lebens mud!" basically translates to "Beer, love, and song never makes life tiresome". Markings include “Western Germany” on the handle, the stein mold number “1160” under the handle, and “1/4 Ltr.” on the rim above the handle. This stein has a Swiss Mapsa music box which plays “O Mein Papa” (“Oh My Papa”). The lid is as bright as new and does not have the tarnished look of the other two. I believe this lid was cast in aluminum using the same numbered mold. Inspection of this stein shows a small section of the base was broken during a move years ago (see pictures). Glued back together, the cracks are unnoticeable except on very close inspection. Overall, all three of these 8-3/4” high, 1/4-liter steins are in very good condition and have never been used except for display. Although there was no visible manufacturer mark found, they have the typical designs and colors of GERZ steins. The lids all have two markings, “DBGM” for Deutsches Bundes-Gebrauchsmuster (German Federal Registered Design, a post 1949 registration mark) and the number lid mold “60”. They all have scuff marks around the highpoints on the bottom from sliding.
