Description: Silver-plate Lion Figure Aquamanile Oil Table Lamp Perfume oil Lamp Presented is an elegant Italian style Grand tour era Lion figural Aquamanile perfume bottle or table lamp. This great piece has a detailed design with a link ring from lions chest with a knob end scent spoon exiting from the head. An Aquamanile is an ewer or jug-type vessel in the form of one or more animal or human figures. It usually contained water for the washing of hands (aqua + manos) over a basin, which was part of both upper-class meals and the Christian Eucharist. Historically (since the 6th century) the term was used for a basin used for priest's ablutions. The water was supplied by a subdeacon, and aquamanile was a symbol of subdeaconate. The term was later transferred onto secular ewers. Most surviving examples are in metal, typically copper alloys (brass or bronze), as pottery versions have rarely survived. This miniature is an excellent example of Grand Tour Era souvenirs circa 1890 in beautiful condition with only some possible ware of plating, some scratches, possible missing chain and the scent or oil spoon may not be original to this piece. It is an excellent piece for the collector of small miniatures from exotic climbs and makes a great show piece for display.
