The opening car chase scene is said to payhomage to the 1971 film “The French Connection”, and the film’s ending is basedloosely on the ending of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 film “Breathless”. Besson started writing the storythat was developed as “The Fifth Element” when he was 16 years old; he was 38when the film opened in cinemas. Besson wanted to shoot the film in France, butsuitable facilities could not be found; filming took place in London andMauritania instead. He hired comic artists Jean “Mœbius” Giraud and Jean-ClaudeMézières, whose books inspired parts of the film, for production design.Costume design was by Jean-Paul Gaultier. “The Fifth Element” receivedmainly positive reviews. The film won in categories at the British Academy FilmAwards, the César Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Lumières Awards. “TheFifth Element” was a strong financial success, earning more than US$263 millionat the box office on a $90 million budget. At the time of its release, it wasthe most expensive European film ever made, and it remained thehighest-grossing French film at the international box office until the releaseof “The Intouchables” in 2011. Regarding the man himself, Bessonhas been described as “the most Hollywood of French filmmakers”. Scott Tobias (forThe A.V. Club) wrote that his “slick, commercial” action movies were “sointerchangeable – drugs, sleaze, chuckling supervillainy, and Hong Kong-styleeffects – that each new project probably starts with white-out on the titlepage.” American film critic Armond White (in The National Review) has praisedBesson, whom he ranks as one of the best film filmmakers, for refining andrevolutionizing action film. He wrote that Besson dramatizes the struggle ofhis characters “as a conscientious resistance to human degradation”.* * * * * CONDITION: Each item offered is in pristine-to-mint condition, meaningthere are no obvious defects to the item itself, there are no holes or tears tothe factory shrink-wrap, and there are no loose discs.
