Most tow trucks are shipped from the factory with IPS (Improved Plow Steel) Fiber Core cable. Fiber Core is more flexible and is generally considered to last longer because the fiber core holds lubricant that is squeezed out when the cable is placed under load. Some tow trucks are shipped from the factory with Steel core cable. Steel core cable can be either IPS IWRC (Improved Plow Steel Independent Wire Rope Center), EIPS IWRC (Extra Improved Plow Steel IWRC), or EEIPS IWRC (Extra Extra Improved Plow Steel IWRC). Steel core cable is more crush resistant than fiber core but not as flexible. EEIPS is the strongest followed by EIPS and then IPS. The Holmes 1701 is an example of a tow truck where the manufacturer specifies a 5/8" EEIPS cable. We have the manufacturer's requirements for many tow trucks.
