LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/09/1945 - HFSID 51262 LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI Stokowski signed this typed letter on Hollywood Bowl Association letterhead to MGM composer Johnny Green in 1945 to say that he would "be delighted to have your fanfare at your convenience". Accompanied by eight unsigned typed letters from Green on various subjects, including notes on the Halloween music for Meet Me in St. Louis. Typed letter signed "Leopold Stokowski". 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on Hollywood Bowl Association letterhead with Stokowski as Music Director. July 9, 1945. Addressed to Mr. Johnny Green, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Culver City, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Green I understand perfectly and shall be delighted to have your fanfare at your convenience. With friendly greetings, Sincerely Leopold Stokowski". Lightly toned and creased. Two file holes and rust stains near top edge. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: 8 letters (9 pages total) of unsigned typed carbon copy letters from Johnny Green to Mr. Leopold Stokowski, Music Director of the Hollywood Bowl Association, Hollywood, California. These letters are dated between July 2, 1945 and Sept. 18, 1946, including: one letter saying that Green was "flattered that you have asked me to submit a fanfare"; one two-page letter that accompanied a "properly marked conductor part and properly put together score of the Halloween music for 'Meet Me in St. Louis"; three letters asking about an unnamed score that Green wanted Stokowski to listen to and critique; and two more letters asking Stokowski for the copy of Serenade for a New Baby that he had given Stokowski. Lightly toned and creased. Lightly nicked at right edge. Lightly discolored at left edge. Two file holes near top edge. Carbon copy marks. Neither Stokowski nor Green wound up in the credits for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). JOHNNY GREEN (1908-1989, born John Waldo Green in New York City) was an Academy Award-winning American composer, songwriter and conductor. Green wrote standards like Out of Nowhere, Rain Rain Go Away, I Cover the Waterfront and Body and Soul, as well as scores for movies, including his Academy-Award Winning scores for Easter Parade (1949), An American in Paris (1954), West Side Story (1962) and Oliver! (1969). Green was accepted into Harvard at age 15. Guy Lombardo heard his Gold Coast Orchestra between semesters and asked Green to create dance arrangements for his orchestra. He wrote his first hit, Coquette, in 1928 for Lombardo. After leaving college, he got a job as a stockbroker, but he didn't take to it and left to pursue a musical career. He started out arranging music for dance orchestras, but was commissioned to write works for larger orchestras in 1933 and, finally, was given his own orchestra, called Johnny Green, His Piano and Orchestra. He continued to play piano and to conduct, most notably at MGM, where he was responsible for changing the studio's overall musical sound with Conrad Salinger in the 1940s. LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI (1882-1977, born Leopold Antoni Stanislaw Boleslawawicz Stokowski in London England) conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1909-1912), Philadelphia Orchestra (1914-1936), N.Y. Symphony Orchestra (1944-1945) and Houston Symphony (1955-1962). He formed the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He was known for his lush interpretations of the classics and it was under his baton that the orchestra played the music for Disney's Fantasia (1940).
