BOARD 8.5 BY 10.5 INCHES FRAME 13.5 BY 15.5 INCHES Juan Jonas Rimsa was born in 1903 in Lithuania. He was a painter of figurative compositions and landscapes. He studied painting in Argentina and later settled in Bolivia where he painted the jungle and its inhabitants. He arrived in Bolivia in 1937 and settled in Sucre where he taught at the Academia de Bellas Artes for three years, after which he opened a Taller Superior de Pintura. In 1945 he moved to Potosí, where he also did some teaching, and in 1947 to La Paz. Rimsa left Bolivia in 1950 to live in Mexico, and after a few years there he settled in Santa Monica, CA.Rimsa brought to Bolivia the Expressionism that was an important style in northern European art at that time. Fascinated by the light, the native people and the earthy energy of Bolivia, he adapted his figurative paintings to develop a passionate expressionism, using intense colors with strong brushstrokes, frequently outlined in dark colors to achieve dramatic effects unusual in Bolivia at that period.His paintings, crowded by their subject-matter, have a characteristic rhythm and expressive movement, as in Man in Yellow (1938; U. Sucre, Mus. Charcas) and The Founding of La Paz (1948; La Paz, Alcaldía Mun.). A retrospective of his work was held in the Alcadía in La Paz after his death in 1975.
