Roosevelt with his initials as President to his Secretary of Labor and first woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet, Frances Perkins. EXCESSIVELY RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT AS PRESIDENT TO HIS SECRETARY OF LABOR AND FIRST WOMAN APPOINTED TO THE U.S. CABINET, FRANCES PERKINS President Roosevelt asks Secretary Perkins to find a high-ranking position for John Austin Latimer in the Department of Labor, his close friend and chief of staff to Senator James F. Byrnes: “F.P., Austin Latimer now with Ja.F. Byrnes…as an assistant. A good man & strong for us. He is from S.C. Strongly recommended by Lister Hill. With considering, F.D.R.” Ultimately, Perkins ignored Roosevelt’s request and Latimer served as special and executive assistant to Postmaster General James A. Farley from 1933 to 1941. SECRETARY PERKINS IGNORES PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S ORDER TO EMPLOY HIS FRIEND AND CHIEF OF STAFF TO SENATOR JAMES F. BYRNES Only a handful of handwritten letters from President Roosevelt are known to exist with three having previously sold for $13,542 in March 2016, $10,706 in June 2021, and $20,619 in February 2022 at RR Auction. Contains one page on lined paper, measures 8 by 5 inches, created in [Washington, DC] in circa 1933, in very fine condition with only light staining, and accompanied with the original White House mailing envelope addressed to Perkins. Barker Acting Comptroller of the Treasury Department. Washington, September 14th, 1841.” IMPORTANT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY JOHN TYLER AS PRESIDENT APPOINTING THE FORMER MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA AS THE ACTING COMPTROLLER TO THE DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY Barker (1784-1858) was an American soldier, playwright, and politician fighting as an officer during the War of 1812; famously known for writing the plays The Indian Princess (1808), Marmion (1812), and Superstition (1824); and serving as the Mayor of Philadelphia from 1819 to 1820. President Tyler would appoint Barker as Acting Comptroller in 1841 and he would continue to serve in that capacity under the James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan administrations until 1858. Contains one page on a bifolium with docketing on the integral page, measures 12.5 by 8 inches, and in fine condition with light toning and soiling and evidence of mounting on the verso.
