Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare January 18th, 1932 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the HARRY CLARKE, HARRY REVEL and MACK GORDON musical comedy "SMILING FACES" at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Following an ambitious tour, the production would open August 30th, 1932 at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre in New York City and close after only 31 performances.) ..... The musical starred FRED STONE (who originated the role of "The Scarecrow" in 1903 in the Original Broadway production of "The Wizard of Oz") and featured PAULA STONE, ROY ROYSTON, LOTTI LODER, BILLY TAYLOR, HOPE EMERSON, DORIS PATSTON, ISABEL O'MADIGAN, ADORA ANDREWS, EDDIE GARVIE, BOYD DAVIS, HERBERT LYLE, WILLIAM LILLING, ALI YOUSSOFF, GEORGE HERMAN and the ALBERTINA RASCH DANCERS (who would be replaced by the MERRIEL ABBOTT DANCERS when the production opened in New York.) ..... CREDITS: Book by HARRY CLARKE; Music by HARRY REVEL; Lyrics by MACK GORDON; Sets designed by WATSON BARRATT; Costumes designed by ERNEST SCHRAPPS; Choreographed by JACK DONOHUE under the supervision of Mme. ALBERTINA RASCH; Directed by ZEKE COLVAN; Produced by the Messrs. LEE and J. J. SHUBERT ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 3" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes the song "Bootblack Blues", "Cane Dance", "Do Say You Do", "Do Something Different" and "If You Want To Be Successful In the Movies" which were cut during tryouts ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light fold across the middle, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard .....
