Description: Antique 1881 Watercolor Painting William Pye Coastal Village Seascape in Original Frame. The frame measures 14 5/8" x 23 1/4"; the visible artwork alone is about 8 1/2" x 17 1/4". Signed lower left corner Wm Pye '81 and guarantee genuine as described, not a print, genuine hand painted watercolor. Fine restored condition in the original frame and glass with acid free backing added, slight bleed mark from when it had the old pine backing boards in place. See detailed photos. William Pye (1855–1934)William Pye was born at Blackburn, Lancashire in 1855. His father was an ironmonger and he worked in the family business before going to sea. He later studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art, London. He is recorded at Hadleigh, Essex in 1881 and the following year in Weymouth, where he settled with his wife Annie at ‘Dunmore’, Longfield Road, Rodwell for over 50 years. He taught at Connaught House in Weymouth until his death. He was also one of the earliest members of the Dorset Field Club.Pye exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham; Dudley Gallery; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Hibernian Academy; Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours; Royal Institute of Oil Painters. There is a catalogue of ‘The Work of William Pye 1853–1934’ [sic], an exhibition that took place at the Sherborne Gallery, Dorset, but no date is given. His etchings recorded parts of Weymouth that no longer exist.Pye was a regular churchgoer. He attended All Saints’ church in his early days at Weymouth and became a longstanding member of Holy Trinity church choir, followed by the choir of St Nicholas’s church. He requested that after his death his body should rest before the funeral in his studio at his home, where his last unfinished work was on the easel. He left no immediate family (Dorset Echo, 17th December 2003).Annie died aged 70 on 4th June 1929. William died aged 79 on 12th January 1934. His funeral is recorded in the Southern Times of 20th January 1934. His obituary in the Southern Times noted that ‘Mr Pye did much to put Dorset on the map in the art world, the variety of the county proving an endless source of inspiration to him ... and his brush has recorded virtually every scene of interest on the Dorset coastline.’
