ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra Rare Antique Late 19th Century c.1880-1895 ‘Large Format’ Hand-Colored Antique Restrike Engraving After the Famous Late 15th Century Renaissance Religious/Inspirational Fresco Masterpiece of Jesus & His Twelve Apostles on the Eve Before His Capture & Death titled, “The Last Supper” (Originally titled: “Amen Dico Vobis Quia Unus Vestrum Me Traditurus Est.” AKA “L’Ultima Cena”), by the world-famous listed High Renaissance master artisan, ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ (Italian, 1452-1519), and also after the original 1831 engraving by the well-known listed engraver, ‘Giovanni Folo’ (Italian, 1764-1836). We currently have the antique B&W version of this same engraving listed, so please have a look! About the Painting & Scene: The Engraving shows the moment when Jesus has just said, “Amen Dico Vobis Unus Vestrum Me Traditurus Est.” (Translates: “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”). Da Vinci’s original fresco painting was done from 1495-1498, and is located in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, Italy. The painting represents the scene of ‘The Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles’, as it was told in the Bible, in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Interestingly, Judas (The Betrayer) was known in the Biblical scriptures as the “keeper of the money bag” (treasurer for the group) and in most depictions of ‘The Last Supper’ he is shown as holding the money bag which is how da Vinci depicts him in the painting (either as treasurer or for possibly indicating the payment of 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus), but da Vinci was also a master of subtlety and included a second clue of Judas’ betrayal and identification—beyond clutching the money bag under his right arm, in front of his plate is a small container of salt which has been tipped over and spilled on the table. Salt played an important role in everyday Biblical life. Beyond use in daily meals, salt was also part of sacrificial offerings to the Lord. Every grain offering of yours you shall season with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt (Lv 2:13, NAS). Salt was also part of the covenant-making process. Covenants were generally confirmed by sacrificial meals, and salt was always present. David received his kingdom forever from God by a “covenant of salt” (2 Chr 13:5). Eating together was part of friendship and salt was regularly on the table, thus the Arabic expressions, “There is salt between us,” and “He has eaten my salt.” Covenants could be broken by the symbolic act of casting salt on the ground. In Da Vinci’s Last Supper, not only was Judas clutching the money bag with 30 pieces of silver, but in front of him was a pile of spilled salt. It perfectly symbolized a broken covenant of friendship (Ps 41:9, Jn 13:18). Oddly as well, Judas is the only person to have his elbow on the table (spilling the salt) and his head is also ‘horizontally’ the lowest of anyone in the painting—likely also referencing him as the betrayer & the lowliest of the group. (Sources: biblia, “Sermons and Biblical Studies: The Last Supper in Art and History”, by Gene Fackler; favorite-paintings blogspot, “Art & Paintings: Leonard da Vinci – The Last Supper”, April 21, 2011) Publisher & Engraving Info: Although this is a late 19th century printing c.1880-1895 from Giovanni Folo’s ‘original’ engraved plate, it is still a highly-detailed, extremely crisp & clear impression worthy of the original itself—Simply stunning! (As with most cameras and lower resolution photos on the internet, crisp details & fine linework of engravings & etchings often get somewhat lost in translation, but trust me, the engraving linework on our piece is magnificent). The publisher info & location, ‘Published by G.A. Radtke & Co. New York.’, appears printed upper left in the top plate margin area just above the image (For the American Publisher, Gustav A. Radtke, c.1877-1895 with various incarnations of business names), with the artist info, ‘Leonardo da Vinci dipinse’, as appears lower left just under the image, and the engraver info, ‘Giovanni Folo incise in Roma.’ (For Giovanni Folo, Italian, 1764-1836), as appears printed lower right respectively. A ‘KEY’ to all of the apostles names, along with Jesus, are printed in Latin across the bottom accordingly in the plate margin, and reads as follows (from left to right): ‘Bartholomæus.’, ‘Jacobus-Minor.’, ‘Andreas.’, ‘Judas.’, ‘Petrus.’, ‘Johannes.’, ‘Christus.’, ‘Thomas.’, ‘Jacobus Major’, ‘Philippus.’, ‘Matthæus.’, ‘Thaddæus.’, and ‘Simon.’. Folo’s original title in Latin, “Amen Dico Vobis Quia Unus Vestrum Me Traditurus Est.” (among other text), was burnished off from this particular print, but the impression of the typeface is still very lightly visible if you really look hard enough. Interesting side note: Upon completion of his original engraving in 1831, Giovanni Folo had the honor to present a proof of his engraving to King Francis I of France, who not only was pleased to express his high admiration of the plate, but who also honored him with two medals–one of gold and one of silver, with his effigy, and by also placing his name on the list of subscribers! Almost 20 years after Folo’s publication of his original engraving of “The Last Supper”, a publisher by the name of Mr. David Bogue, 86, Fleet Street, purchased from the executors of Folo’s estate every remaining ‘Proof Impression’ (4 versions) of Folo’s famous engraving and he advertised them for sale “at low prices” in 1850 to include: ‘Plain Proofs’ (£2 5s), ‘Earliest proofs with The White Cup’ (£3 5s), ‘Proofs Before Letters’ (£4 4s), and ‘India Proofs (only 7 ever taken)’ (£5 5s)—which equals $334.69, $468.56, $624.75, and $780.94, respectively in today’s dollar for 2022—certainly not cheap back in the day!!! The Engraving is printed on a very nice heavy-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock and has never been framed. What’s neat to see is that the printing registration pinholes are visible in the upper left & right outer margin corners, which often are trimmed off before resale or when framed back-in-the-day. Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 28-3/4” x 39-1/16”, Plate size is 19” x 36-5/8”, Image size is 17” x 35-1/8”. The Engraving is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique late 19th Century age with very fine detail, crisp line-work, rich tones & beautiful hand-coloring with absolutely no color fade—simply beautiful! The superb detail is amazing and the photo doesn’t do it justice (as previously mentioned, often happens many times with shooting engravings & etchings, detail gets lost). This Engraving has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other engravings & etchings since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as ‘mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its fantastic never-framed condition. No tears! No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous engraving with the extremely minor & basically negligible exceptions of: Ultra-minimal, tiny & faint foxing specks & spots scattered here & there on the sheet which are only barely noticeable in the outer plate & margin areas and aren’t even really worth mentioning; There are a handful of small & tiny droplet ‘yellowed’ moisture spots in the upper right outer margin corner (not reaching plate margin) which are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Extremely minimal & slight crescent-creasing here & there in the image area which are only noticeable from the back and also aren’t worth mentioning; Other minimal & slight creasing scattered here & there in the plate & outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges and a few small ones in a couple outer margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear bends, as well as a few tiny printing ink offset specks scattered here & there in the outer margins and other extremely minimal outer margin edge-wear with some tiny dents & dings here & there—as previously mentioned, all outer margin issues are completely negligible since the margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Minimal/negligible toning of the stock from age which isn’t too noticeable at all especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself; Minimal & slight topical surface soiling from age (very lightly grubby in spots) and from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other lithos & engravings which is only noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas—also negligible; and a few ultra-tiny surface nicks in the image area at left (near table legs & on wall) which certainly don’t detract from the engraving at all and could easily be touched up with black ink or watercolor, but we’ll leave that up to the winning Buyer to do if they so choose. This rare antique late 19th C. Restrike engraving will look absolutely stunning framed-up(!) and would be a perfect addition to any Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Folo, or religious/inspirational art collection! Simply beautiful!
