A Woman's Story of Pioneer Illinois (HC, 1919)

Description: This is a graphic account of the life of the founders of Illinois as it was lived and observed by and recorded by the author. In 1820, Illinois was occupied by several India tribes, among them the Kickapoo, Sauk, and Foxes and frequented by the fur traders of the American fur Company. Illinois at the time had a population of about 35,000 the vast majority of whom were rough-hewn poorly educated immigrants from the Southern states. The author and her husband, John Tillson, immigrated into this environment from Plymouth County Massachusetts. As a well educated, refined, and wealthy family, they encountered the inevitable cultural shock but went on to be builders and leaders in their community. This book represents the collected memories of Christiana Tillson written at the end of her life for her youngest daughter who had been born too late to experience life as it existed in the early 1820's. The original book is exceedingly rare with only 5 copies known to exist at this time. This Lakeside Classics edition printed in 1919 has also become quite rare. For those aspiring to build a complete collection of the Lakeside Classics, this will be one of the more difficult volumes to acquire.
