Toledo is the repository of more than 2000 years of history. Successively a Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of Cordoba, an outpost of the Christian Kingdom, and in the 16th century, the temporary seat of supreme power under Charles V. Its many works of art and architecture are the product of three major religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The obverse shows a view of the Puerta del Sol, a 14th century Mudejar-style building, together with a mural decoration of the Prayer Room of the Synagogue of Samuel Levi, located in the heart of Toledo's Jewish quarter and today's Sephardic Museum. In 2010 the Spanish Royal Mint started a series of 2 euro commemorative coins dedicated to the Spanish sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
