Description: This is the 1937 Liber Brunensis yearbook of Brown University, published at Providence Rhode Island. It is a first edition, hardcover, in very good condition. One of the pictured graduates is Thomas J. Watson, Jr., son of the founder of IBM. According to Wikipedia, Thomas John Watson Jr. (January 14, 1914 – December 31, 1993) was an American businessman, diplomat, Army Air Forces pilot and philanthropist. The son of IBM Corporation founder Thomas Watson, he was the second IBM president (1952–71), and the 16th United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1979–81). He received many honors during his lifetime, including being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Johnson in 1964. Fortune called him "the greatest capitalist in history" and Time listed him as one of "100 most influential people of the 20th century". Watson became president of IBM in 1952 and was named as the company's CEO shortly before the death of his father, Watson Sr., in 1956. This yearbook was owned by "Bud" Sylvan Haskell. His signature is on the inside front cover of the book. Before and after serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Sylvan Haskell, known as “S.K.” or “Bud,” worked in the sporting goods department of Kaufman's Department Store in Pittsburgh. While in Pittsburgh, after acquiring a small manufacturer of workbenches and drafting tables in Wilkinsburg, Pa., he streamlined the plant and redesigned the products. With the increase in white collar employment in the United States in the years after World War II, Haskell Inc. pursued what it called “the Great Middle Market.” They targeted junior executives by producing sturdy and sleek office furniture at a lower price than traditional office furnishings. Proximity to the heart of the American steel industry allowed the company to secure materials at affordable prices even during the shortages of the post-war years. The company grew from nine employees in 1947 to 270 employees working two daily shifts in 1962. The yearbook is in very good condition, with very minor bumping to top and bottom of spine. There are no loose or missing pages. It measures10.75" x 8" and has a brown cover. The book is unpaginated, but my best guess is that it is 225 + pages including advertising. .
