Description: Stories of New York Annie Eliot, Bliss Perry, George A. Hibbard, John S. Wood, Edith Wharton Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1893 FIRST edition Edith Wharton (born Edith Newbold Jones; January 24, 1862 – August 11, 1937) was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray realistically the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996. Among her other well known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories. It was not until Wharton was 29 that her first short story (Scribners Magazine - 1891) was published: "Mrs. Manstey's View" had very little success, and it took her more than a year to publish another story. This is her FIRST publication of ANYTHING in book form. Collection of five short stories which originally appeared in the pages of Scribner's Magazine. Included are "Mrs. Manstey's View" by Edith Wharton; "From Four to Six: A Comedietta" by Annie Eliot; "The Commenest Story Possible" by Bliss Perry; "The End of the Beginning" by George A. Hibbard; and "A Puritan Ingenue" by John S. Wood See photos for condition details.
