1870’s CDV Portraits SAMUEL & SARA WOODHOUSE & CHILDREN Photos

Description: In this listing we are offering five CDV photos circa 1870’s. They are of the accomplished doctor, naturalist and explorer Samuel W. Woodhouse, his wife Sara, and his children, Samuel W. Woodhouse, Jr., and Matilda Roberts Woodhouse. Samuel W. Woodhouse (1821-1904) CDV This CDV is circa 1870's & measures 4 3/16 inches by 2 7/16 inches. This Samuel Woodhouse photo is in excellent condition. The CDV is marked on the back "M. P. Simons, 1320 Chestnut St. Philada." This photo & a selection of other photos were discovered in a personal photo album that had belonged to Samuel W. Woodhouse, the noted naturalist, surgeon and explorer who took part in the Sitgreaves and other expeditions. A number of the CDV photos in the album were of various well known people as well as of Woodhouse relatives and others whom we were unable to identify. The album was put together in the 1860's and 1870's. The listings of images from the album have the name Woodhouse in the listing titles. Samuel Washington Woodhouse was born on June 27, 1821 & died on October 23, 1904. He was appointed physician and naturalist of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers' survey of the boundary of the Creek Nation in the Indian Territory in 1849. The expedition was led by Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves. On the expedition Woodhouse discovered and named previously unlisted types of birds and collected various botanical specimens. Woodhouse was the author of "A Naturalist in Indian Territory: The Journal of S. W. Woodhouse, 1849-50." Woodhouse went on a second Sitgreaves expedition in 1851 to the Zuñi and Colorado rivers. On this expedition he survived both a wound from a Mohave arrow & a rattlesnake bite. Additional information about Woodhouse is online on the Oklahoma Historical Society's Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture. Sara (Peck) Woodhouse CDV This CDV is of Sara (Peck) Woodhouse, the wife of Samuel W. Woodhouse. She is photographed with their son, Samuel Woodhouse, Jr. who was also known as S. Willie Woodhouse. When he was a young man, Samuel Woodhouse Jr. (1873-1943), went to Jefferson Medical College and was in the Class of 1895. After graduation he pursued a double career in medicine and in art. He was a physician through the end of World War I, during which he served as medical director for the Red Cross in Southern France. In 1919 he left the field of medicine and became director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which post he held until 1928. His "hobby of collecting eighteenth century furniture and silverware and his intense interest in early American craftsmanship and odd topics of art won him a high reputation in Philadelphia circles as art expert and antiquarian." (From his obituary in the Jefferson Medical College Alumni Bulletin.) This CDV has a penciled marking on the back "S. Willie Woodhouse aged 2 Mo. 10 Days." This CDV is circa 1873 & measures 4 1/8 inches by 2 15/32 inches. This CDV photo of S. Willie Woodhouse with his mother is in excellent condition. The back has the photographer's identification "M. P. Simons, 1320 Chestnut, St. Philada." Samuel W. Woodhouse, Jr. (2 CDVs) The CDV of Willie Woodhouse as an infant has an inked marking on the back "Willie 2 mo."
