1861 North Carolina & 1863 Confederate Currency – Civil War Relics - 4333

Description: The original hand signed 1861 “Two Dollars” - “The State of North Carolina” note was issued from Raleigh, N.C.. The serial number “4317” was also hand inscribed. It has a plain back as is common for the period. The note was printed by “F.W. Borneman - Charleston S.C.”. The original 1863 hand signed “One Dollar” Confederate note was engraved by “Keatinge & Ball Columbia SC” and has the hand inscribed serial number “5073” in brown ink. Clement C. Clay is pictured at center. The note was printed on pink paper with a plain back. There were about 200 different people who signed for each treasury official. For the most part they were women, many the wives or daughters of Confederate soldiers who had been killed in action. Notes printed during the Civil War were printed in full sheets and cut by hand. The borders vary and are often miss-cut. They were hand signed before cutting and you sometimes see the bottom flourish of a signature on the note below. The artifacts were recovered from the Fredericksburg, Virginia battlefields. The brass buttons at center were issued on Confederate uniforms. The lead ammunition at left are all Federal issue; a .44 round for the Colt or Remington revolver, a .52 Sharps carbine generally used by the cavalry branch of service and a .58 round for the Springfield rifle or other imported arms of that caliber. The lead ammunition at right are; a .69 musket ball and a .54 for the Mississippi or the Austrian Lorenz rifle used by both sides and a Confederate .57 Enfield. They all used a paper cartridge which has not survived in the ground. The white color or patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The hand made solid Oak frame is 12” x 16” (glass) in size. The matting is brown. All of the frame and display work was done in our cabinet shop here in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The frame is ready to hang. The wire is recessed which allows the frame to rest flat back to the wall as in a museum mount. The “bumpons” on each back corner protect the wall and keep the frame level. The certificate will have the information on the bullets and other artifacts which can be taped to the back of the frame for reference. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
