Description: The Port Folio, New Series Conducted by Joseph Dennie, Esq. Volume VI, No. 1, July, 1811. Philadelphia. 98 pp. 5 pp. or advertisements, 6 x 9". In poor condition. Missing front cover. Spine is heavily ripped and binding is exposed. Pages are untrimmed and heavily toned. Many pages are detached from binding. Text block exhibits heavy offsetting and moderate instances of age staining. Edges exhibit moderate finger soiling. Rear cover is heavily ripped, advertisements are readable. Please see photos. The Port Folio was a Philadelphia literary magazine published between 1802 and 1827 and published on a variety of subjects from political commentary, to literary criticism, and topics of public interest. The magazine's editor Joseph Dennie also contributed many articles under the pseudonym Oliver Oldschool. This July 1811 issue contains an article on the Life of Sappho, an ancient Greek poet known for her lyrical poetry, an article on the effects of nitrous oxide, original poetry, and a biographical sketch on the life of Dr. William Linn, the 1st Chaplain of the House of Representatives and the 2nd president of Queen's College (Rutgers University).
